On a personal note, I have to share that the Ripper class I'm teaching has 19 students this time--18 female. When I proposed teaching the class, I was told I probably couldn't get many women interested...Hopefully, they will add to the number of serious students of the case.

Also, someone mentioned the thought that men may be embarrassed to discuss certain aspects of the case with women. I don't find that true, although I think it's more a product of generational openness than a worry about what's appropriated in "mixed company."

Now, when does one become a Ripperologist? Many on here demur when answering whether or not they are one. Is there a ritual, complete with kneeling and swords?

    Haha.

I always assumed it to be because she thought her stuff would be stolen if she left them at whatever lodging house(s) she was staying at.

That she was a blinking pack rat... Probably of necessity, but something of a pack rat all the same.

(Dear Lord, I hope none of you ever get a look in my purse... )

Robert, you put a lof of bread in the oven, still with the plastic wrapping on, two pints of milk, still in the cartons, in the oven as well, throw a packet of raisins in there as well, ram a clove and cinnamon plant in there as well... you might need butter, everyone likes butter.
You get a bloody mess, everyone's favourite recipe.

And you are right, when Eddowes crashed she had the equivalent of a 747's cargo hold in her skirts.
Says AP Wolf in a very timid voice: 'I quite like prostitutes'

AP, people have told me how to make one over and over again but I'm jiggered if I can remember now.

    Tom,

You said "When Ally and AP argue...who is the man and who is the woman???"

Hey that easy, we all know that Ally is the man.

That's why all suspect books written by women are about the more 'romantic' suspects..

Only one book on a significant other of any of the Ripper victims has been written...by Leanne Perry. That rests alongside the one written by Bruce Paley on Joe Barnett.

How books could be classified or suspects considered "romantic" is difficult to determine.... Books on Sickert,Stephen, and Maybrick have been written by both genders. Unless women see Maybrick ( a philanderer) Sickert ( an artist ) or Stephen ( of an undetermined sexuality) as romantic, then perhaps we may consider the book by Toughill on Wilde as romantic to the homosexual element in the field. I don't think that the reason any of the women wrote the books on who they theorized as being the Ripper had one iota of romance behind it. Considering the gender preference of Mrs. Cornwell, how can one theorize "romance" as a motive in her case?

No female has come up with a book on anagramists yet or imaginary suspects such as Stanley did. True, the recent tripe about Macnaghten is an outrage and apparently aimed at those into "conspiracies", but the majority of books with less than verifiable sources emanate from masculine brows. In addition, male authors are more dogmatic than their female counterparts.

Why a suspect's celebrity or assumed attraction to the opposite gender would be a factor for anyone to write a book is beyond me. Some male Ripperologists have undoubtedly written books simply to promote individuals with near zero or zero evidence, period ,to back it up and hopefully female authors as well as male authors in the future will be wise enough to not fall into that category.

To take one example - insignificant in the wider picture, but anyway - the pieces of stale bread in Kelly's cupboard. I didn't know until Jane Coram mentioned it, but these could be made into bread pudding, so they were probably being saved for a purpose.

Then there's the business with the pilot coat. Would Kelly have worn it on the night of the 8th-9th?

I'm sure there are lots of quite shrewd things that women could tell us about, for instance, Eddowes.

Yes, I do adore you, Ally. And I'm fond of AP too, though you have a much cuter azz. Regarding AP's race, he is white, I've seen his pic. It's just hip to say you're not. His woman and his daughter are both hot blonds, for the record.

    Billie,

Yes, I CAN speak for every reader. Whether I'm right on every account is another matter. But for the average Ripper student, having politics shoved down your throat when you buy a book for investigative history is, in fact, annoying. Having facts changed or ignored to suit a political agenda goes beyond annoying for most of us, and that's precisely what you will find in any and all histories written with a feminist slant. Just like Nazi propaganda. That's why they call them feminazis.

    Yours truly,

    Tom Wescott

Aw don't listen to him Tom. AP's just mad because I've proven he's a liar and a fraud and a fake, and he is exactly what he claims to despise in others: someone who invents evidence to sell books.

So he's just taking his bitterness out on you, because he knows how much you adore me.

    I'm not a white man.
    But mixed race.
I feel it important to understand that the vast majority of people who are led into prostitution are either addicted to a class A drug, or a clever pimp.
They fall in love if you like, and who can control that?

I didn't miss you at all, Tom, and just like Ally you are best when you fade.

    Tom,

It's probably not at all to your credit that the only one who appears to have caught your joke was a moronic 12 year old who thinks the epitome of argumentative skills consists of repeating "you're an idiot" over and over.

But at least you've found an equal now.

Welcome back, you've been so missed.
