  • Where to look for more information and Cricket

I have a couple of questions.

    1) After listening to the podcast on Druitt I am now curious... how easy is it to find guest lists/social news etc about Dorset social events? Do most large houses etc have archives that would include this information?

    2) How into sport was Valentine's school? Could Druitt be employed as a 'games master' (ie cricket coach)??

    Sports

I know that a lot of graduate friends of mine that became schoolmasters in gap years (late 1970's) were actively encouraged to coach cricket or rugby. Whether this was the same back then i am not sure.

      Hello Evilina and Revpetero,
The Late Victorian era ( around 1888) was a boom time for newspapers in Britain. London and regional.
For social activities at a local level, local newspapers would give detailed descriptions of social doings.Private diaries would give details too.
As for sport.Specialist publications on say Hockey, were published and weekly journals and daily newspapers published columns on each sport.
D.J. Leighton's book on Montague Druitt ( " Montague Druitt: A portrait of A Contender") shows just what is out there about Druitt's cricketing activities.
As to whether he doubled as a sports master, most likely during the week. He was a " cricket tragic" too busy actually playing on the weekend.

        Hi guys,

You might wish to try here,
Dorsetforyou.com has been replaced with dorsetcouncil.gov.uk you can find all our information on this website

Which is the Dorset Local History and Archives Centre.

Failing that D.J.Leighton visited The University itself and looked through there records.
        Regards Mike
