    Tufnell Becket Southgate

Son of Tufnell and Ellen Southgate of The Hollies, Eliot Hill, Blackheath. Tufnell Southgate Snr was solicitor.
Tufnell Becket Southgate is listed in 1881 as a pupil taught by Druitt at Valentine's School as follows:
    Name: Tufnell B. Southgate
    Age: 14
    Estimated Birth Year: abt 1867
    Relation: Pupil
    Gender: Male
    Where born: Lee, Kent, England
    Civil Parish: Lewisham
    County/Island: London
    Country: England
    Street address: 9 Eliot Place
    Occupation: Scholar
    Registration district: Lewisham
    Sub registration district: Lee
Oddly he is also listed at his home address with his parents with exactly the same details in the same census.
Southgate by 1896 had got himself into a state of bankruptcy and the article below (Times, 25 November 1896) gives a fairly full account of his background.

Interestingly Southgate's father had chambers at 7 Kings Bench Walk.
The notice below is from 1866 but the company is still listed at the same address in the telephone directory for 1906

        Andy,
many thanks for that - very helpful

Southgate blew nearly £14,000 in less than a year and a half (1895-96)
Does anyone have an idea of what that sort of amount would be worth in today's money?

        Chris

£1,113,735.66 in 2006 according to the retail price index (www.measuringworth.com)

Should have stayed away from Monte Carlo.
