  • Per Tumblety -"Gutting"

    Greetings all,

This came from the Tonawanda Volksblatt (I work for the City of Tonawanda) September 31, 1857 by the New Era, November 3, 1857:

…The first cure he [Francis Tumblety] performed was at a place called Beersheba, in Western New York. In accordance with the directions of Aesculapius, he had directed a whole shower of letters to this place, for Dr. Francis Tumblety. Accordingly, he had no sooner arrived at the inn, than the landlord, who was also the postmaster, produced his letters, with an air of profound deference. The Doctor proceeded to open them leisurely and smilingly before the gaping inmates. Two or three of them were seen to contain bank bills, of what denominations was not visible. The Doctor carelessly extracted them, observing jocosely, that he called that operation “gutting.”

Sending letters to yourself –containing cash- to a new location for your herb doctor business and then opening them in public was so Tumblety. …and then to call opening letters “gutting”. How ironic that he will one day be implicated as Jack the Ripper.

    Sincerely,
    Mike

Tonawanda is basically a suburb of Buffalo, New York, and Francis Tumblety worked the area before he began his Canadian enterprise.
