  • Did Aaron Kosminski wear a beard?

I have been thinking about the photographs we see of traditional Jewish families around 1888 and have noticed that then as now, a Jewish male from an orthodox Jewish family would have worn a prominent and thick, beard. So unless Aaron was very rebellious and refused to wear a beard or had secretly joined the young Jewish radicals like the ones who went to the Berner street Club , it seems very likely he too wore a beard. And yet we hear of no description of a man seen in the vicinity of the murders who sported a beard;not from Elizabeth Long [Hanbury St sighting],Joseph Lawende [Church Passage sighting] or PC Smith or Israel Schwartz [Berner St sighting].In fact nobody mentioned seeing a man wearing a beard in the vicinity of the murders.
I believe Aaron Kosminski would have been much more likely than not to have worn a beard, like other young, traditional Jewish men, in 1888.

    Great point Nats!
Must get some pics........To be honest -I do feel that most of the members of the Berner St Club and probably Lawende and Co sported at least some facial hair -if not a full set -and as you say..........odd that no witnesses remarked.....Oh and he had a beard!

    Think I'd have noticed that!

...I'm surprised he didn't get caught by the fuzz more often

Thanks Suzi and Sam.I knew it would give rise to a few laughs but seriously I reckon there is a strong likelihood that he did wear a beard.

Interesting point, Nats. Even Marx had a beard - in fact he looked as if he had two.

Close! I'm sure you recognise that as one of Cruikshank's original drawings for Oliver Twist, showing Fagin conspiring with "Morris Bolter" (aka Noah Claypole).
