  • Charing Cross to Hammersmith

Some information on train frequencies between Charing Cross and Hammersmith from a 1883 London Guide:

    Journey time: 23 minutes.

Train frequency: 4 per hour weekdays (incl. Saturday), 2 per hour Sundays. There is a note that on Saturdays "some" of these trains "do not run."

This would have been on the Metropolitan District Railway, today's District Line of the LU. The station served was "Hammersmith Broadway," which is today's Hammersmith station on the District and Piccadilly Lines. The same line went on the serve "Shaftsbury Road" (today's Ravenscourt Park) and Turnham Green. Turnham Green would have been closer to the spot where Druitt's body was found than Hammersmith, yet Druitt's ticket was for Hammersmith.

There was omnibus service at 15 minute intervals between Hammersmith Station and Turnham Green Station. This service apparently followed King St/Chiswick High Road as it stopped at the Ravenscourt Arms. This would potentially place the omnibus service somewhat closer to Linden Gardens and Tuke's Manor House Asylum than taking the train all the way to Turnham Green, making it plausible for Druitt to select this option if his destination was one of these. Fare from Hammersmith to Turnham Green was 2d.
