  • Jack a(Ex) member of the essex regiment?

I seem to remember that one of the letters carried the crest of the Essex regiment.Could it be that he was something like a medic there?Afterall it is known he's supposed to have knowledge of anatomy. And the knife being the kinda knives the soldiers carried?
Soz if it sounds stupid still new here.

    Hi
The envelope with the crest of the Sussex regiment (which was the three Prince of Wales feathers) was found at the Chapman murder site and it was stated that this had been found by Chapman at the lodging house where she was staying

      Hi Chris,

Maybe you can solve a mystery.

According to my researches, in 1888 there was no "Sussex Regiment", but in 1881 two regiments did amalgamate to become "The Royal Sussex Regiment".

      Here's their crest—

Surely the seal found on the envelope in the yard at Hanbury Street should have read "The Royal Sussex Regiment".

      Regards,

      Simon

        Hi Simon
The envelope should have read (and may well have read) ROYAL Sussex Regiment, which, as you rightly say, was formed in 1881.
It may have been known colloquially as the Sussex Regiment.
My description of the crest was not entirely correct - it is actually the Garter Star with one ostrich plume (as in the triple plumes of the Prince of Wales) surmounting it

          Hi Simon and Chris

The plume shows somewhat better in the following image of a cap badge for the regiment:
