  • When did Dew get to H Division?

    Good morning,
A-Z and others say that Walter Dew was transferred to H Division in 1887, but I can't find more precise dates, not even in which month. Does anybody in the Forum know?
Thanx in advance for your time and your help,
    W

I don't know, I'm afraid but I'll post an answer of sorts.

Wikipedia (!) claims "early in 1887" but doesn't give a source for that assertion so, as always, treat that with a sizeable degree of caution.
I won't always agree but I'll try not to be disagreeable.

No need to be too cautious about that; Dew says as much himself in his 1938 book: "In the early part of 1887 I was transferred to the " H ", or Whitechapel Division of the Metropolitan Police, and attached to Commercial Street Police Station."

I have not been able to find the exact month, though.

      The best,
      Fisherman

Wikipedia appears to be right on this occasion then!

            I think Dew`s transfer to H-Div was between June 2nd and 11th June 1887

On the attached Old Bailey case on June 1st, he is a uniformed officer working out of Harrow Road Police Station, Paddington Green.

Here, on the 11th June he is now H-Div.

Doh !! The second attachment is from 1888 not 1887

So.... going off the first attachment, his transfer was between June 2nd and June 27 (he is H-Div by the time of the Old Bailey appearance.)

I'll look at the Met records at the National Archives (Kew) and see what I can find.

It was June 1887, the exact date escapes me.

He transferred to Paddington (F) Division on 22nd December 1888.

Yes, and it was Walter Dew later in life who mentioned Inspector Andrews being assigned to the Whitechapel murder case along with Abberline and Moore.

                        Sincerely,

                        Mike

                          Found it.

According to H Divisions register, Dew joined 12th June 1887, and was transferred on 22nd December 1888.

                          Cheers
