Roy - that was Francis FRITH! Similar but not exact. Frith was about the biggest provider of postcards to Edwardian Britain and the company is still in business (mostly as an archive) today in Reigate, a couple of towns away from me. They're somewhat odd in that they CLAIM they own the copyright on their photographs in perpetuity, which is in direct contravention to the law stating it expires 70 years after the death of the photographer. Yep, I've used old images of theirs in my books more than once!

Andrew - you're absolutely right in that I did put that on the East End Watch thread (and I must update that for some sad and shocking news about the creepiest house in Bell Lane...) but, in fact, it's all gone the way we suspected. The closure lasted about two weeks and now, although the Crispin Street end is permanently padlocked, Commercial Street is still open and the security guards have totally disappeared.

Andrew King of the City Surveyors Department never got back to Richard (Jones) about our licence, though he did chase it up twice. Back to normal!

I have a collection of Francis Frith's postcards showing Hull and Yorkshire, and like Philip says, they claim copyright on these really old photographs, and often put huge watermarks on images to stop copying!

I got this of eBay the other day. It's a class photo/postcard from the Bucks Row School. There's no date but it looks around 1910. The school closed in 1912 I believe.


It looks like it was taken at the back about here, looking towards Durward Street.


And Cheapside 1908. Nothing else needs to be said.
