    Charles Street

Here are some maps and pics of Charles Street.
The first is looking South towards the city centre, with the rather large flats on the right the position of number 35, RDS birthplace.
Note the loved up couple almost walking in front of the building, they watched me for ages!!!

Same area, different era. Here we see the map dominated by the Freetown Way, car park and building which occupies the site were RDS was born.

Some brief snippets from the Dawber/Dauber Slate and Slate Merchants.
The Dawber family was Robert D'Onston Stephenson's mother's side.

This is the 1901 entry and the earliest advertisment I can find of the company.

                      Back to Charles Street.

Right, back to Charles Street, Birth Place of RDS and at the turn of the century a mini shopping paradise.
This is Bethel Croft's New Store, at number 14 Charles Street, which opened in 1910. It later became a Jacksons, which was a convenince store.
At one point there were three Jackson's stores on Charles Street alone!

                            Customs House

Here is a shot of Parliment Street, looking South towards Whitefriargate and of course Custom's House.
Tenny and Dawbers were on the East Side were this metal construction fence has been erected. A lot of work has been done around this area recently, to improve the place.
RDS was of course in employement at the Custom's House.

This is the view from the window of customs House down Parliment Street towards what would have been Old Dock, Queens Dock and now Queens Gardens.
Parliment Street was home to solicitors Tenny and Dawber, which was RDS Cousin.

Next up one of my fave shots of the Customs House. Taken of the main hall's ceiling, showing it's unique detail.
This is now used as a staffroom for the staff of Boot's Pharmacy, lucky bunch.
Most of the building is unsafe internally due to the lack of upkeep so the top floor was out of bounds, but this room would have been were the customs clerks operated from.
