  • Howard Vincent's Police Code 1889

On this day, the 28th January, 1870 Lt. Col. Sir Edmund Y.W.Henderson, K.C.B., Commissioner of the Metropolitan Force convened a committee of five Superintendents to consider his memorandum, which read "..that there should be established a Widows and Orphans Fund and an Orphanage of small size for the benefit of children who have lost both parents." Thus was established The Metropolitan Police Orphanage and fund. The following year The City of London Police force joined, and*the name was altered and The Metropolitan and City Police Orphanage and fund was created. To commemorate this event, Adam Wood and myself, Neil RA Bell would like to make the following announcement.

"Sir Howard Vincent's Police Code 1889" is a republishing of the famous guide for Metropolitan Police of the Victorian era, with an introduction by Neil RA Bell and Adam Wood. The Police Code was written by Howard Vincent, Director of the CID, and first published in 1881. It was an invaluable resource to Metropolitan Police officers and was updated regularly over the next 50 years. The version being reprinted is for 1889, written in 1888 and in use by officers at the time of the Whitechapel murders.

Originally, a share of proceeds from sales were donated to the Metropolitan and City Police Orphanage, and we are proud to announce that we will continue this tradition by donating an equal share of profits to the Metropolitan and City Police Orphans Fund. Accordingly, the foreword to the book will be written by the Met's Commander Neil Basu, who is the Chairman of the Fund.

The book scheduled to be published in April 2015.

There is a Facebook page upon which you can follow the progress of the book and, over the next months, and updates regarding availability and ordering shall be placed here also, along with interesting snippets of historical bits n pieces.*https://www.facebook.com/groups/policecode1889/

Also, the authors are very proud to reveal details regarding their publishers, Mango Books.

Mango Books are a new, independent publishing company with a background in design, print and marketing, and just as importantly an interest in historical true crime spanning more than 35 years.

Mango Books was formed to provide an opportunity for authors of historical non-fiction books who might struggle to be published by a mainstream company due to the subject matter not being 'commercial' enough. We work with the author to develop their idea, liaising on every aspect so that our writers are truly part of the project. They have a say on everything from cover design to marketing angles, with a dedicated Facebook discussion page set up and promoted, and a launch event planned for each book.

Although Mango Books don't print vast quantities to stock the shelves of Waterstones or W H Smith, they have extensive experience in the genre and can target our books at those most likely to buy them, and by producing small quantities they are never out of print! They also produce Kindle versions of our titles, with everything available through their Amazon page.

And because their overheads are low, they offer good terms too!

This is a republishing of the famous guide for Metropolitan Police of the Victorian era, with a detailed introduction by Neil RA Bell and Adam Wood, and was originally written by Howard Vincent, Director of the CID, in 1881. It was an invaluable resource to Metropolitan Police officers and was updated regularly over the next 50 years. The version being reprinted is for 1889, written in 1888 and in use by officers at the time of the Whitechapel murders.

We discuss how guidance given in the Code was used by officers investigating the Ripper crimes.

Originally, a share of proceeds from sales were donated to the Metropolitan and City Police Orphanage, and we are proud to announce that we will continue this tradition by donating an equal share of profits to its successor, the Metropolitan and City Police Orphans Fund. Accordingly, the foreword to the book will be written by the Met's Deputy Assistant Commissioner Neil Basu, Chairman of the Fund.

Doors open at 7.30pm, members free, non members £5 entrance fee.

Also, for those who may wish to partake in a pre society meeting get together and tour earlier in the day, Ian Parsons shall be launching his latest book, The East End beckons, the story of a piano player, and his journey from smugglers Cornwall to the vibrant, dangerous East End, at The Kings Stores, 14 Widegate Street, E1 7HP. This is also on Saturday 1st August, and commences at 2.pm. and finishes at 5pm

At the event the book will be available for a special price of £8. For the more engaged history enthusiast, there is a special offer on the day. £10 will buy a copy of the book and a tour.

So the stage seems to be set for a bibliophilic day, hope to see you there.

Never ones to miss a photo opportunity, on Saturday - the day after the launch of Sir Howard Vincent's Police Code 1889 - authors Adam Wood and Neil R A Bell returned to Great Scotland Yard to get a snap of the book at the site of where the likes of Commissioner Charles Warren, Assistant Commissioner Robert Anderson and Chief Inspector Donald Swanson were based during the Whitechapel murders.

We're very pleased to report that Police Code 1889 is now available on Amazon:

                          ==============================================

Howard Vincent's Police Code, 1889 is a republishing of the famous guide for Metropolitan Police of the Victorian era, with an extensive introduction by Neil Bell and Adam Wood.

The Police Code was compiled by Howard Vincent, Director of the CID, and first published in 1881. It was an invaluable resource to Metropolitan Police officers and was updated regularly over the next 50 years.

The version reprinted is for 1889, written in 1888 and in use by officers at the time of the Whitechapel murders. Over 200 pages, Howard Vincent carefully described in simple terms the legality of more than 900 incidents which might occur in the daily life of a police officer, from baby farming and wandering lunatics to illegal burials and the identification of prisoners.

Originally, a share of proceeds from sales were donated to the Metropolitan and City Police Orphanage, and we are proud to announce that we will continue this tradition by donating an equal share of profits to the Metropolitan and City Police Orphans Fund - every copy sold therefore contributes to the Orphans Fund.
