Default Books row

"Can you lend me sixpence"
Is all I found it it took,
To throw me hat into the ring,
an' maybe write a book
"Can you lend me sixpence"
is all that it would cost
to write a leery theory
wouldn't it............ "Dear boss"?

So when the barrels bottom
is inevitably scraped
I'll just tap out some tat about
a princely bunch of grapes
and if the rabid masses think
that .."this is not enough.."
I may (brick)write a diary,
or I may accuse Van Gogh

As Druitt bowls to Chapman
front footed Chapman drives
beyond the flailin' Cohen
an' 6 other ones besides
Its fielded on the boundary
thrown back into the square
where mitred minions look agog
at ghosts just flittin' there

"In or out"? the legions shout
as shattered stumps lay low
but most just simply shake their heads
cos no-one really knows
Swanson says "Its marginal"
"might not be out at all"
McNaughtons memorandum?...
he simply can't recall

Another timeless test match,
its ending in a draw
In parlance It is "Over"
Cos no -one ever saw
The ghostly opening batsman
Who could not sweep it ..but
If any side would bowl one wide..
Crikey..He could cut!

I liked it, too. Great poem with, fittingly for a Yorkshire-based poet, a clever cricketing thread flowing through it.

Speaking of threads, I love the "Books Row" title for this one

Andy, I only noticed your Sheffield connection when Gareth mentioned Yorkshire.

Barnaby and Boycott!

i liked it, too, it's very amusing. Thanks for sharing.

Has anyone noticed that each new JTR book or documentary is received well by the public, only to be forgotten once the next one comes by?
