  • Her Last Walk

The two red stars left to right mark (1) the place where Polly was last seen at the corner of Whitechapel and Osborn and (2) place of death, Bucks Row. No witness saw her with a man.

what would the actual distance be in kilometres or miles?

Because on the map it looks like quite a walk for somebody who's very drunk and who does so in about an hour (if I remember correctly)
In heaven I am a wild ox
On earth I am a lion
A jester from hell and shadows almighty
    The scientist of darkness
    Older than the constellations
The mysterious jinx and the error in heaven's masterplan

That distance isn't too far to walk (I'm not sure exactly how far in Km it is) even if you are drunk. It's about 5 minutes sober (don't ask!).

Given there is about 1 hour between Nichols being seen on Whitechapel Road and the possible time of her death, it makes one wonder where she wandered during that hour. One would assume there may be a certain amount of standing about or going off the beaten track.

I find it unlikely that she would have gone straight from her meeting with Emily Holland to Buck's Row. But that of course is merely conjecture.

I'm not sure if this link will work properly...but it's about 2000 feet.

          hi

off topic, but there is a site you can use to condense long urls.

your big link has been squashed into this one:

Find local businesses, view maps and get driving directions in Google Maps.

hope this is helpful to some

                Regarding Roy's map in post#1 ...

Where would the entrance to the Pavillion Theatre have been?

Directly above the 'E' in WHITECHAPEL ROAD, Stephen.

                    Astute question, Stephen.

What about the Grave Maurice? Was that one too far away?

                        Thanks, John

Googling 'Pavilion Theatre Whitechapel' throws up loads of interesting stuff.

Not least this Arthur Morrison 1889 article

Tower Hamlets History Online. A series of articles, relating to the Borough of Tower Hamlets, abstracted from various old Books and Journals.

There's a photo seemingly showing the entrance on Whitechapel Road but the maps seem to have difficulty showing what was going on.

Where's Mr Goad when you need him?

                        And where was Pavilion Yard?

                        And thanks also, Sam

Apparently my sense of humour is too subtle for some of you. That The Grave Maurice is just around the corner was, of course, my point.

In addition, here's a quote from the Dickens and London website:

Today there are seven pubs in the three quarters of a mile length of the Whitechapel Road between Commercial Street and Cambridge Heath Road. There were thirty-three in the late nineteenth century when the murders of Jack the Ripper branded Whitechapel as the dark haunt of dangerous people.

Hey Professor, it was a set-up. Now don't let that bookshelf come crashing down on your head.

According to the 1873 Ordnance Survey Map there were ten PH`s on your left as you walked east from the corner of Osborn St to the top of Brady St (North St in 1873).
