This my opinion and to the best of my knowledge, that is, if I'm not joking.

Another could be the likes of:

    Dr. (John) Thorndyke - 1907
    Ellery Queen - 1928
    Inspector (Joseph) French - 1924
    Philo Vance - 1926

        I voted for Charlie Chan.

By the way, Jack Boyle, the creator of Boston Blackie, took part in the investigation of the Villisca Axe Murders (http://www.villiscaiowa.com/the_crime.html). He appears to have been rather corrupt since he tried hard to pin the murders on a man who was obviously innocent.

Thanks - I've done some study on that case. Boston Blackie had a somewhat shady past so perhaps Boyle was the model. I'd also heard that Dick Tracy was inspired by Eliot Ness although Tracy came after 1930 of course.

I believe Dupin was called Pierre Dupin in the movies.

              My all-time favourite

Mr Albert Campion of Bottle Street, Piccadilly W.

The invention of the incomparable Margery Allingham. First appearance in 1929.

I frequently re-read my Penguin Allinghams and I also have many of them on CD read by Philip Franks.

I was thinking of series when I laid this out but there were one-offs like Mademoiselle de Scuderi - 1819

                  I Wimsey

I love Edward Petherbridges portrayal of him

Thanks Nell. I have the first DVD box set of the Campion TV series and it's very good.

Another "Another" possibility would be the team Tommy and Tuppence - 1922

1868 and 1853 but I had to look those up

Too bad these polls don't allow for a couple of dozen
