It wasn't uncommon for a white master to provide for his half-blood children, particularly for sons. A recent episode of "Who Do You Think You Are?" told the story of an African-American woman who found out her ancestor was the son of a prominent Texas cattleman who refused to stop using the white man's surname, and eventually inherited a ranch. He also rose to prominence as a black politician in the Reconstruction period. His house now has a plaque on it.

There are two ways to be fooled, one is to believe what isn't true, the other is to refuse to believe that which is true.

I like the song but don't necessarily agree with his view.

                            • 50 years ago - 1966 June 21 - The body of Paul Benda, 5, is found in an unimproved area near the Northern New Jersey coast. He had been sexually abused, beaten, tortured with lit cigarettes and murdered with an ice pick. The little boy was nude when found but his clothes were close to the remains. Efforts were made to tie Paul's slaying with a series of others in the same region but those victims were all at least 16-years-old. Whether his killing was related or not, Paul's murder remains unsolved today.
