I paid my £25 deposit. I will be there. Looking forward to the event, Andrew! Great photograph of the gas lamp. Good work once, again.

Default Speaker announcement

We're delighted to announce details of our first speaker for the Jack the Ripper East End Conference taking place this coming August:

Mark Ripper:
THE TRIAL OF ISRAEL LIPSKI

The 130th anniversary of the murder of Miriam Angel by Israel Lipski provides an opportunity to re-evaluate this awful crime. Did the social forces operating on the East End in 1887 – including some with which we are still very familiar, such as immigration, prejudice and fake news – cause Lipski to offend?

Or was he a man apart, resorting to murder in spite of, rather than because of, the environment in which he existed?

Mark Ripper’s talk reconsiders the evidence for Lipski’s guilt, and explores a possible hidden motive for the murder, unnoticed by the lawyers who defended him.

We hope that the talk will also mark the return of an old friend, not seen since the late 1950s…

Writing under the name M W Oldridge, MARK RIPPER is the author of WHITECHAPEL AND DISTRICT (2011) and THE MOAT FARM MYSTERY: THE LIFE AND CRIMINAL CAREER OF SAMUEL HERBERT DOUGAL (2012), and is co-author of THE A-Z OF VICTORIAN CRIME with Neil R A Bell, Trevor Bond and Kate Clarke (2016).

------------------------

Information on the talks from our other speakers will be announced soon, and we'll also be revealing our final speakers and other events!

Places are going very fast for this event, so if you have yet to secure your place by paying a deposit please visit www.ripconference.com

We are delighted to announce our Keynote Speaker at the Jack the Ripper East End Conference, appearing on the evening of Saturday, 5th August 2017:

Charlotte Mallinson:
IN THE NAME OF JACK: RETHINKING VICTIMHOOD IN REPRESENTATIONS OF THE WHITECHAPEL MURDERS

Charlotte’s lecture will offer a different perspective on the Whitechapel Murders from the ones, which, by and large, have been represented in ‘Ripperature’ and the mainstream media. With an exploration of the killings in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, the aim of her paper will be to shift the lens of analysis away from a recognisable but mythologised killer and centre it on the victims of the original murders and more recent crimes. In doing so, the presentation will draw on new research undertaken as part of her doctoral study. It will highlight and challenge the integral ‘Whorephobia’ that has been the backbone of so many ‘popular’ reimaginings of these heinous killings. Offering a challenge to the elevation of ‘Jack’ to mythic hero, it will explore its tragic impact on women in the years after the original crimes. Ultimately, she hopes to show that how ‘Jack’ and his crimes are remembered affects women - not just in the past but in the ‘here and now.’

Charlotte Mallinson is a Ph.D. researcher and lecturer at the University of Huddersfield. She is currently just over halfway through her doctoral degree. The working title of her thesis is, “How ‘Monsters’ are Made: An Intersectional Deconstruction of the Cultural History of the Whitechapel Murders, 1970-2015”. The overarching aim of her research is to analyse and historicise how the women killed during the Whitechapel Murders have been represented in ‘Ripperature’, heritage/tourism, film/TV and news-media.

Wish I could afford it. Charlotte's lecture topic sounds great! Will you put it up on audio after the fact?

All being well, and subject to speakers giving their permissions of course, the talks will be recorded for future release via Rippercast.

The network of streets that run behind the former Commercial Street police station still retain much of their Victorian era atmosphere; for the time being at least. This is Blossom Street which runs north from The Water Poet, one of our two venues for this years Jack the Ripper East End Conference.

Thank you, Andrew, that is great news. Now I will need to solve the mysteries of podcasts and learn how to work them
