  • Orbituary : Michael Sherrard QC James Hanratty's trial barrister 1962

This was in today's Daily Telegraph

Michael Sherrard, who has died aged 84, was considered one of the finest advocates of his generation, and as a junior barrister in 1962 defended James Hanratty, 25, in a highly controversial capital case.

Nat, he was clearly a lovely man who whilst young in his career must have taken such an emotional knock back from the verdict and having to endure the thought of JH taking those short steps from condemned cell to trap door. By all accounts he was a good family man who despite that setback went on to become an ambassador for the legal community in our country, RIP Michael Sherrard QC.

Indeed Steve. But he was 33 very young and relatively inexperienced to take on such a high profile case.He was also very fond of James Hanratty and devastated by the verdict.
RIP Michael Sherrard QC an honourable man.
