Default Ripper Real Estate

With gentrification, many of the buildings with a connection to the Whitechapel Murders have been converted to flats. Periodically those come on the market and we can take a peek inside. Here's one associated in a general way with the case.

Or perhaps you'd like to live in Old Spitalfields Market?

There's a house available at 16 Fournier St.(Church Street) that's going for a pretty penny.

Care to buy a flat in the Working Lad's Institute where several of the Coroner's Hearings were held? There's a flat in the chapel going spare.

This looks very similar to 26 Dorset Street, apart from the ground floor.

Sorry, Josh, no, you can't compare the house at 26 Dorset Street to the historic house being sold in this listing:

"A grade II listed, Georgian townhouse situated on one of the most desirable streets in Spitalfields. Built in the early 1700's, this charming period home is arranged over five floors and boasts a South-facing rear garden with a purpose built studio."

Apples and oranges. Listed historic building compared to a hovel.

If anybody fancies a pub conversion, there's the old Earl Grey's Castle at Buxton Street and Vallance Road.

I think the board school in Durward St either is being or has been turned into flats.

Yes it has and I have periodically found listings for it. There don't seem to be any available right now but I will keep trolling the Whitechapel real estate sites and see if one pops up.

I have also found listings for the flats built over what was Winthrop Street and along Buck's Row (Durward Street). There's one section of that development which is right where New Cottage was and just next to the Polly Nichols murder site.

Hi Chris,
Well I'm not saying the houses were identical inside and out by the time of the Ripper, but I don't think that Dorset Street was always 'the worst street in London'. I was under the impression that both buildings were originally built around the same time as townhouses, to accommodate the influx of Huguenot silk weavers. When the silk trade moved elsewhere no.26 (along with many others) was converted to single-room occupancy, and the garden into a row of cottages. But the one in Fournier Street seems to have remained as a family home. So apples and apples, at least originally, but the worm of urban decay ate away the core of one.
