Congratulations Siobhan for having your article as the cover story of this issue! Your original research has discovered Francis Tumblety's origins in Ireland and being raised near the "Lake of the Cures". Healing properties; so Francis Tumblety. The trip on the Coffin Ship, Ashburton, certainly does sound like it was a voyage from hell.

Here are some additional comments about Siobhan's article:

        Thanks guys.
I haven't seen the Whitechapel Journal yet so am looking forward to getting my copy.
The story involved more than a year of writing letters to provincial and national newspapers in Ireland and eventually readers of the Anglo Celt gave me a lot of help - so too did a woman I call "Madame X" from Cavan.

For those who don't subscribe to the Whitechapel Journal, the story is called "Francis Tumblety, Madame X and the Voyage from Hell".
        Talk anon -

          Hi Siobhan,

Interestingly, young Martin H. McGarry claimed to have travelled with Francis Tumblety in 1882 to Inniskillen Falls (you interpreted as Enniskillen Falls in Co. Fermanagh). The Lake of the Cures is situated exactly between Enniskillen and Dublin, the port of entry. He just may have visited his old homestead in 1882.

          Sincerely,

          Mike

            Inniskillen/ Enniskillen Falls

            Hi Mike,
I contacted the people at the Falls for info but they never got back to me -either by phone or email. The waterfall is now known as Tullydermot Falls...
I hadn't forgotten about McGarry etc but just couldn't get anything from the people who now run the place - which was disappointing.
            Best,
