    Union Mill

Next up is a fairly recent ordnance survey map from the 1980's. The mill has now gone, but the Tallow factory remains, now listed as "Works"

      Union Mill

A modern photo showing the site now. Note the Tallow mill still standing to the left. I was lucky enough to gain access to the site of the former Union mill and spoke at length with the foreman.

        Union mill

Another shot concentrating on the main body of the site. The rear end of the former Tallow mill can be seen just behind the concrete mixer.

The following map is the same location in 1889, the property is now a Salvation Army Barracks. (The previous map was dated 1854).

Unfortunatly it was demolished only recently. Many of the current owners of the local businesses remember the building, and my father has memories of walking by when it was a warehouse.

Here is the description that accompanied the picture ( I had to crop the picture on left of the Police Station to bring the file size down)

Looking in the opposite direction towards the direction of Willows house, which at this point was Willow Terrace. The whole of C Division.

Willows House is the large building at the centre with grounds. Levetts Court is to the right, this was demolished for the police station. Sculcoates Inn is further right. Isabella Place (love to know were that one got its name) is to the left. York street is behind and Church street in front to the top of the picture.

An oranance survey map circa 1980. Showing the current land use. The surrounding area was destroyed during 1941 air raids. The spot which was once Willows House/Williows Terrace is now a car park.
