  • Doss Houses

    Colleagues,
Once again, I have inquiries about doss houses. Does anyone know the average number of boarders in such a house? I have read that such a house might hold 35 but I believe Crossingham's had a great many more. Unfortunately, I have not been able to retrieve the information about Crossingham's and I really need the information.
Second, does anyone know the dimensions of such a house? I realize the crowding was sardine-like, but it would benefit me to know how large these houses, and their interior rooms, were. I know some of the houses had once belong to silk merchants but that does not convey to me what their size was.
All assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Its easy. Go to the 1881 census look up 35 Dorset St and Timothy Donovan and you will get the complete list of men in the lodging house. I had it printed out a few years ago but cant lay my hands on it at the mo. There were two houses 34 and 35 and more than 30 men. Its free on familysearch

    Miss Marple.
