  • Police hunt 'Grim Sleeper' serial killer

greeting all anyone following this story?

(CNN) -- Los Angeles police are searching for a serial killer dubbed the "Grim Sleeper," who is thought to have killed 11 people.
The killer, who police say murdered from 1985 to 2007, was nicknamed the Grim Sleeper because he seemed to take a break between homicides, police said.

Authorities this week released a 9-1-1 tape recorded shortly after a killing in 1987, in the hope of producing clues.

"Yes ... I'd like to report a murder," an anonymous caller says on the tape. "The guy that dropped her off was driving a white and blue Dodge van. He threw her out. ... He threw a gas tank on top of her. All that you can see sticking out is her feet."
Police found the scene just as the caller described and found the van. But they are still searching for the caller and members of the now-defunct church that owned the van.

The killer is wanted in 11 deaths and another homicide attempt, police say.

Detectives say they have the Grim Sleeper's DNA, and a $500,000 reward has been offered for information leading to an arrest and prosecution. The killer shot his victims, police said.

Porter Alexander has waited two decades for the Grim Sleeper's arrest. His daughter Alicia Alexander became the Grim Sleeper's eighth victim in 1988, police say.

"No one should have to face anything like this," he said. "To experience their daughters or sons taken away as early as she was."

Is John Floyd Thomas Jr. The Westside Rapist and the Grim Sleeper?

LAPD Uses DNA to Find Serial Killer

Who is John Floyd Thomas Jr.? Born in L.A. John Floyd Thomas Jr. was raised by his grandmother and godmother after his mother died when he was 12. He joined the U.S. Airforce in 1956. He was said to be late and sloppy and was dishonorably discharged. Shortly after that John Floyd Thomas

Jr. was arrested for burglary and attempted rape in L.A. Thomas was convicted and spent 6 years in prison only to violate parole and ended up behind bars until 1966.

After doing his time, John Floyd Thomas Jr. held various jobs. He was a social worker during this time and a hospital employee, as well as a personal electronics salesman. During this time, the Westside Rapist was attacking white senior women.

The Westside Rapist would rape the seniors and then squeeze their necks. They would be found with blankets and/or pillows on their heads. 20 victims managed to survive. But, as police would find out, 20 survivors can have just as many eye witness accounts of their attacker. There was also no DNA tests back then like there is now. 17 victims would be attributed to the Westside Rapist in the mid-70's.

10 years later, Claremont would fall prey to an attacker. The same crime of rape/strangulation/blankets and pillows on the head would be committed. But due to poor communication, this crime spree would not be connected with the Westside Rapist. A new name, the Grim Sleeper would be attached to these crimes. 5 victims, older white women, were raped and strangled with their faces covered up in the Claremont area. The attacker would go undiscovered.

It is said that in the interim of the 10 years between the Westside Rapist and the Grim Sleeper, John Floyd Thomas Jr. was serving time for 2 counts of sexual assault. Still, none of this was put together. John Floyd Thomas Jr. was never even a suspect in either the Westside Rapist crimes or the Grim Sleeper crimes.

1978 John Floyd Thomas Jr. was sent to prison for rape. John Floyd Thomas Jr. was released from prison in 1983. He moved to Chino..the stalking began. While the Claremont murders were being committed John Floyd Thomas Jr. was employed as a peer counselor at a hospital.
