sorry Ryan
i dont know, but i have a question about the Chapman photos myself that i'm hoping an intelligent Ripperologist will come and answer!
I was just asking on another thread (Bury) about photos. I understand the technology around this time was pretty new.
My question is we do have some photos Of Chapman...do we know when these were taken and what Chapman was doing at the time? Can we reasonably conclude that only the more well off people of this time would have photographs done? Can we conclude then that by the time these photos were taken, Chapman was on the up economically...do they co-incide with him becoming la di da is what i am getting at?
thanks to anyone who can helpbabybird

Hi Baby bird67,
You dont have to go far to find photos of George Chapman. They are on this site!
All you need do is go to the menu on your left.Go to the third item down-it begins " Introduction>Victrims>Suspects.Once you come to Suspects click on it ,then Severin Klosowski/George Chapman. You will find three really good strong photos of him.In the first he is decked out in a very fashionable, state of the art three piece suit, adorned with a carnation flower in the lapel----thats why I called him a dandy-clearly he liked to dress well. The last photos are quite poignant, they show Chapman with his last victims Bessie Taylor, aged 32 and young Maud Marsh who was only 18.
He knew how to strike a business deal because he ran several barber shops---two within the first few years of his arrival here Cable Street 1888/89 and Whitechapel High Street/ George Yard in 1889/90.
Cheers

hi Nats
thanks for that but i know where they are...i just wondered if they dated from the time in his life when he would have been more prosperous...obviously the ones with his wives were later...is the earliest one from that period also do you know?
He gives me the creeps in his photos..he looks so cold.

We have no idea that Klosowski struck any "deals" in 1888/89. All he'd need to set up in business was a cheap rented room and a set of scissors. It was all about survival.Kind regards, Sam Flynn

Ok Sam---you get it a bit wrong sometimes you know.John Bennet pointed out that I was right about the area around the barber shop that Severin worked in in 1888 ---according to Wolff Levisohn"s court testimony-----ie the one under the White Hart pub at the corner of George Yard,John agreed it was an area of "relative "prosperity.I will post a picture sometime soon of Toynbee Hall -which backed directly on the house where Martha Tabram was murdered-Toynbee Hall was built in 1884 and is still a very splendid building complex---- by any standard. The White Hart itself is a fine building too .
You seem to see Whitechapel just as one vast slum.It wasnt----and this was one of the areas that was described by George Sims as being as" colourful as going on the continent" etc.

Chapman's waxwork resembles a young Harry Andrews - he played Wynne Baxter in the Michael Caine 1988 film Jack The Ripper plus countless castings as British Army sergeants (usually) and Lord Lucan in The Charge Of The Light Brigade.

It was there for 50 odd years, well into the so called Swinging Sixties.
Is that an astrakhan collar?

What I don't see is that even comparatively well-paid East Enders would flock to have their hair cut by an immigrant Pole in the basement of a Whitechapel pub, which - despite what you say - was only a throw of a broken brick away from some of the worst slums in town.Kind regards, Sam Flynn

I doubt if you will be able to find any. The largest image I've come across is here on Casebook. It's the one that's included with his biog. data:
home > suspects > george chapman
If you do find any please post your results. I'm looking for a large image myself.
Good luck,
Bulldog
