  • Tumblety in Rochester NY in 1858

    Hi all,

Newspaper accounts have Tumblety operating in Montreal and Toronto in 1858, but I found this in the Index to Newspapers Published in Rochester, New York: 1818 - 1897 -

William King, arrested on suspicion of having robbed Dr. Tumblety, July 27, 1858.

    Sincerely,

    Mike

    Thanks Mike,

There is a gap in his whereabouts in late 1858. Maybe he was in Rochester when his brother died in September.

Very interesting JM. I visited their family gravesite in Rochester, and on it is a large - expensive - granite gravestone. I wonder if Francis Tumblety himself purchased it at this time (or when his mother died years later)? Only later did his name get engraved on it.

By the way, the last name on the gravestone is Tumuelty, which was one of the variant names used by his father and older brother. The spelling may not have been a mistake.

      Sincerely,

      Mike

There was a William King who was a newspaper publisher, listed also as a printer and advertiser. I wonder if it's the same one. King is a prominent Rochester family name, founders of the city.

That's exactly who this newspaper advertising herb doctor would have dealt with.

With the William King, florist, running a close second.

Tumblety bounced around in 1858 between Toronto, Montreal, Quebec City, Rochester and Buffalo. He seems to have started and ended the year in Toronto.

                Hi Wolf,

He seems to have been tailor-made for this travelling advertising business.
