) If the diary had been serialised in Punch in the wake of the Maybrick Trial, I have little doubt that it would have fooled nobody, and its author would have had no such expectations. I suspect he/she would be highly bemused to think of it finally emerging in an era when it would be taken seriously (either as the real thing, or as someone's serious attempt to swindle the great and gullible unwashed).
