  • 19th Century Serial Killers

Let's organize a list of as many Victorian-era serial killers as possible.

    Jack the Ripper
    H. H. Holmes
    Amelia Dyer
    Mary Ann Cotton
    Jane Toppan
    George Chapman
    Belle Gunness
    Joseph Vacher
    Servant Girl Annihilator
    William Palmer
    Johann Otto Hoch
    The Bloody Benders
    Thomas Neill Cream
    Thug Behram
    Delphin LaLaurie

I'm missing quite a few individuals. Wish I had my Encyclopedia of Serial Killers with me right now so I could reference it, but it's being borrowed by my friend.

"Nurse" Catherine Wilson - Believed to have murdered seven people, although in the way of the UK justice system she was only indicted with one, she was arrested for the murder of her landlady straight after her aquittal for the attempted murder of her employer, she was executed in 1862, the last woman publicly hanged in London.

            Interesting thread Madam Red

Exactly what time frame are we talking about? The 19th Century would be 1800-1899 on the Astronomical Calendar, 1801-1900 on the Gregorian Calendar and then Victoria was Queen from 1837-1901. Also, what is the definition of serial killer?

Anyway, Joseph Philipe would fit into any of those.
This my opinion and to the best of my knowledge, that is, if I'm not joking.

O-er! I just jumped in assuming Madam Red meant the 19th century, whereas as rightly said the Victorian age started in 1837, if her reign is the criteria, Burke and Hare must be discounted as they carried out their crimes 1826/27.
              Sorry!

Plus, we could trim it down to just Victorian serial killers once we get a decent-sized list.

The FBI recently redefined serial murder as requiring two victims instead of three, which was the previous definition.

So "serial killer" would be 2 or more murders by one or more offenders, with a cooling-off-period between the crimes.

The NIJ did always just say two and they didn't even specify a cooling off period - just saying that the murders had to be perpetrated as separate events.

I didn't know there were so many serial killers around in the 19th Century :0

Do Burke And Hare really count as they were in it for the money? I saw a great Black And White film about them. I think Boris Karloff was in it

                            Amelia Sach
                            Annie Walters

Interesting, very interesting. I would like to learn more about all these serial killers.

I think I've heard of Walters before, though. Let me go check for a mo'-

Nope, I was confusing the name with Waters.... Would known baby farmers, besides Amelia Dyer, count as serial killers?

Do Burke And Hare really count as they were in it for the money? I saw a great Black And White film about them. I think Boris Karloff was in it
I think they would. No matter what the reason, they're still killing.
