  • Acquiring a Life

    Right then, you 'orrible lot.

Who is going to stick their neck out and give us a rundown of who the evidence actually points to, regarding who exactly did what, from the moment someone suggested Maybrick might be a good choice for a fake diary of the Whitechapel Murderer, to the last word penned in the finished abomination?

Answers here - not on a saucy postcard.

Then perhaps we can all do something more productive, like removing the fluff from our navel and collecting it in a jar.

    Love,

    Caz

Mike saw a picture of James Maybrick and thought "ooohhh he looks like Jack the Ripper".

    Bought a photo album.

Wrote the text on the word processor.

    Someone else wrote the text.

    *** STROKE ***

He pimps the diary around publication companies.

A couple of mildly Intelligent people are convinced.

It becomes obvious that Mike is a liar and the diary is a fake, but it's too late they are down the rabbit hole.

The diary is kept aloof to prevent conclusive proof of it being a fake and to keep the gravy train rolling.

It will keep going until someone realises this hoax only has one big payday left and that is to expose it as a hoax....the paper fairies down the garden moment.

In about 100 years time, some conspiracy theorist will bring up the photo album again and perhaps it will have another sect of "true believers".
My opinion is all I have to offer here,

    Dave.

    Smilies are canned laughter.

Irrelevant, perhaps, but the authorship of the diary is probably the only significant mystery we have a realistic chance of solving

There's certainly a number of smoking guns but, in this instance, whoever pulled the trigger (or at least handled the ammo) might still be at large, and other physical evidence may yet turn up.
            Kind regards, Sam Flynn

Apart from his death, Maybrick isn't a good choice. But the author of the fake Diary needed someone local ,someone who died at the right time, and someone who was well known in Victorian times, [ so as to make his life easier to investigate, instead of Joe Bloggs from London ], to concoct the document. Pity he couldn't also find someone in his Twenties or Thirties who was known to have been in Whitechapel that Autumn. Might have been more believable

Well actually he didn't have to even die at the right time. Put in prison, emigrated, something like that would have done.

Also, the down side of selecting Maybrick is obvious. Businessman, well travelled, moved in higher social circles attending functions/meetings, travelling abroad. His name cropping up on the minutes of a meeting or on a guest list in Liverpool on the same day as a Ripper murder and it would have immediately been game over.

We probably have a plot involving Harry Dam, George Grossmith and Michael Maybrick.

Just as well that not a single shred of evidence has ever placed Maybrick in the wrong place, then, for our hoaxer-theorists.

To the fair-minded, this would point in favour of Maybrick being the author of the journal, but of course you can propose anything you like on the Jack the Ripper Casebook and people will fawn over your stupid theory with awe and admiration, but if you suggest that Maybrick was your man, the clouds and the clowns open up.

Maybrick wrote the Maybrick journal. Real threads like Incontrovertible, and History vs. make the case irresistible.

Honestly, everyone, just get over yourselves.

There aren't many shreds that place him anywhere. Like the vast majority of people at the time, or now for that matter, his every movement was not slavishly recorded.
                        Kind regards, Sam Flynn

Hmmm. Then we should turn back to those threads which place him firmly in the dock.

                          See what I did there?

But there don’t seem to be many reports with him on guest lists at any time.

I can't see any reason why there should be. Such ephemera would have been comparatively rare, and fewer would have survived.
