  • Tumblety's Family Gravesite AND his Nephew's

    Hi all,

Brian Young was kind enough to join me in a trip to Rochester, New York, and visit not only the family gravesite of Francis Tumblety, but also his nephew, James "Tumilty" (spelled this way on purpose). The video explains why we needed to visit the nephew's family gravesite. We discovered a few new facts.

    Here's the video: https://youtu.be/CcQWGhY4Gks

    Sincerely,

    Mike

At 0:28 you spell the name wrong Mike.

    Unless it's the accent.

Odd to think of this, but I wonder if Tumblety ever commented to anyone about the Oscar Wilde trials of 1895. They were international news because of WIlde's literary prominence.

          Hi Jeff,

From the Hall Caine letters to personal testimony reports, the evidence suggests he read the papers daily and kept up with any big news. Now, discussing this with anyone is a very interesting question. We have a couple of cases of him engaging in small talk. Now, he never spoke of his family, but did indeed make periodic visits to Rochester and his older brother Lawrence passed away after (1898). His older brother stayed single just like Dr. T., so Oscar Wilde's taste may have been shared by both.

          Sincerely,

          Mike

            Hi Mike

I enjoyed this detailed analysis of the information and inscriptions on the rose red granite memorial marker for the relatives buried in the Tumuelty (Tumblety) family plot in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Rochester, New York. Very well done! Good to know that the visit by Brian Young and yourself to the cemetery was so productive.

Obviously, the family name, be it Tumilty, Tumuelty, or Tumblety, has different variants in spelling. It would be my assumption that Dr T settled on "Tumblety" as the better spelling to adopt for his business.

By the way, I don't accept the murder of Alice McKenzie in July 1889 as a murder by the same hand as the earlier crimes. So my view is that the McKenzie murder does not let Dr T off the hook as the possible murderer of the canonical Ripper victims!

            Best regards

            Chris

Not to mention we also visited the grave of the great Louise Brooks ( A Ripper victim herself in Pandora's Box...one of the greatest silent films ever made!!!).
It was a fascinating trip...Mike and I were able to answer some nagging questions we had... and actually raised a few more questions...all in all a great experience....We got a few good videos and some fantastic photographs and I was only mocked and ridiculed for a few hours by my girlfriend for going (Just kidding... My gal is Mike Hawley's #1 fan... I think she has a bit of a crush on him.....)

Ms Brooks was also the victim in early talkie "The Canary Murder Case", based on a "Philo Vance" novel by S. S. Van Dine, that starred William Powell as the detective. In that she is a Broadway singer and dancer involved in blackmail, who is murdered - and the basis for the story was the unsolved murder of the "butterfly of Broadway" Dot King in 1927 or so.

Absolutely. She had that intangible something, had it in spades, and nobody she shares the screen with even comes close. Here are some of my favourite stills, including one where she is about to meet her fate at Jack's hands.
