Although I did an extensive list orginally I realize (after reading all of this thread) one tune actually was omitted by me. It is literally sung by the Devil ("Mr. Applegate") in DAMN YANKEES, and it is his litany of "wonderful" moments he remembers (like "There was Bonaparte, he was a mean one...", and the Stock Market crash). In the middle of the song he has this charming couplet:

    "I remember the morn,
    Jack the Ripper was born!

Those were the good old days!!"

If you catch the movie with Tab Hunter and Ray Walston (as "Applegate") when he sings that you see Jack approach a figure of a woman on a bed!

As I was perusing this reanimated thread, the voice of Martha Davis of the Motels came to mind- "Only the Lonely can play."

        Depeche Mode - "Strangelove"

        Strangelove
        Strange highs and strange lows
        Strangelove
        That's how my love goes
        Strangelove
Will you give it to me
        Will you take the pain
        I will give to you
        Again and again
        And will you return it

        There'll be times
        When my crimes
        Will seem almost unforgivable
        I give in to sin
Because you have to make this life liveable
But when you think I've had enough
        From your sea of love
I'll take more than another riverfull
Yes, and I'll make it all worthwhile
        I'll make your heart smile

        Strangelove
        Strange highs and strange lows
        Strangelove
        That's how my love goes
        Strangelove
Will you give it to me
        Will you take the pain
        I will give to you
        Again and again
        And will you return it

        There'll be days
        When I'll stray
        I may appear to be
        Constantly out of reach
        I give in to sin
Because I like to practise what I preach
        I'm not trying to say
I'll have it all my way
        I'm always willing to learn
When you've got something to teach
And I'll make it all worthwhile
        I'll make your heart smile

        Pain will you return it
I'll say it again - pain
        Pain will you return it
I'll say it again - pain
        Pain will you return it
I'll say it again - pain
        Pain will you return it
        I won't say it again

        Strangelove
        Strange highs and strange lows
        Strangelove
        That's how my love goes
        Strangelove
Will you give it to me

Nice one, Moonbegger &, (according to some sources) MJK was a mother.

Surprised Elton John hasn't had a mention yet:

Funeral For A Friend / Love Lies Bleeding
              Tumblety'd Connection

Traffic: No Face, No Name, No Number:

I'm looking for a girl who has no face
She has no name, or number
And so I search within his lonely place
Knowing that I won't find her
Well, I can't stop this feeling deep in inside me
                  Ruling my mind
                  I feel no sound

                  Don't know where I'm bound

The scenery is all the same to me
                  Nothing has changed or faded
I'm a part of it, some part of me
                  Painted cool green, and shaded
So, try to find myself must be the only way
                  To feel free

This is an MJK song methinks

                  Regards, Bridewell

                    • For Kosminski: "Aqualung" by Jethro Tull

                      Aqualung

                      Sitting on a park bench
eyeing little girls with bad intent.
                      Snot running down his nose
                      greasy fingers smearing shabby clothes.
                      Drying in the cold sun
Watching as the frilly panties run.
                      Feeling like a dead duck
spitting out pieces of his broken luck.
                      Sun streaking cold
                      an old man wandering lonely.
                      Taking time
                      the only way he knows.
                      Leg hurting bad,
as he bends to pick a dog-end
he goes down to the bog
                      and warms his feet.

                      Feeling alone
                      the army's up the rode
                      salvation à la mode and
                      a cup of tea.

                      Aqualung my friend
                      don't start away uneasy
you poor old sod, you see, it's only me.
                      Do you still remember
                      December's foggy freeze
                      when the ice that
clings on to your beard is
                      screaming agony.
And you snatch your rattling last breaths
                      with deep-sea-diver sounds,
                      and the flowers bloom like
                      madness in the spring.

Perhaps MJD for the last verse!

                      Regards, Bridewell

                      • I think this thread must win first prize for being the most tasteless one ever thought of on Casebook. You should all be thoroughly ashamed of yourselves.

                        • You come across as a group of total morons. Is it really funny that poor women were horribly murdered? Women who had no proper home? Women who had to sell their bodies in order to just survive?

I think the lot of you should be banned until you turn into decent human beings.

                          • Hi Carol,

I don't think anybody's suggesting it's funny, but I take the point about tastelessness. I shan't add anything further and apologise for any offence I've caused.

                            Regards, Bridewell.

                              Hi Bridewell,

Thank you for your post and for your apology.

I must apologise myself for 'going off' like that. I should have kept my thoughts to myself. I'd just been looking at the Mary Kelly thread with the enlargements of her poor face and with her one eye showing very clearly and I came to this thread shortly after (I was checking through the last seven days' posts list). That was why I got so angry. It made me think of my mother's aunt who was murdered in 1917. She went missing on her afternoon off to walk up from Rochester, where she was in service, to visit her mother up on Bluebell Hill (about three miles away). She never arrived and her body (just the skeleton) was eventually found in woods close to the route she would have taken. She was recognized by the necklet she was wearing. She was in her early twenties and engaged to be married. My mother was named after her - Emily Maria. Mum was born two years later. I've known about this since I was a very young girl and it always hurts me to think of my great-aunt all alone with her murderer. I think this is why I feel so much for all the JTR victims.

Sorry to be 'going on' again!

                              You're a good man.

                              Carol
