  • JtRs ability to manipulate society into the 21st century

JtR didn't just manage to divert attention away from gentiles in the 19th century, but has managed to succeed right up until the 21st century.

Many a Jewish suspect, contemporary and modern, have been blamed or implicated as JtR.

How does one interpret misdirection today by a serial killer who operated 127 years ago?

I agree with Shaw. Some genius has taken matters into his own hands and was able to manipulate both contemporary and modern anti-Semitic feelings to his own advantage.

He also brought it down on the government and the royals.

The investigators did believe some things where done to cast suspicion on the Jews. A position the old Jewish community also held.

For example, the graffiti on Goulston Street.

Warren - [could not understand the crimes] ‘being done by a Socialist because the last murders were evidently done by someone desiring to bring discredit on the Jews & Socialists or Jewish Socialists’

Warren - ‘evidently written with the intention of inflaming the public mind against the Jews’

Swanson - ‘to throw blame upon the Jews’

Smith - The writing on the wall may have been written - and, I think, probably was written - to throw the police off the scent, to divert suspicion from the Gentiles and throw it upon the Jews. It may have been written by the murderer, or it may not. To obliterate the words that might have given us a most valuable clue, more especially after I had sent a man to stand over them till they were photographed, was not only indiscreet, but unwarrantable.

If JtR did things to throw suspicion on the Jews, then surely due to the number of Jewish suspects being forwarded today, we have to conclude that JtR had tapped a vein in society that still feels itself in modern times. There can also be no accident or coincidence to this as the intention of blaming Jews was to encourage anti-Semitic mobs that had already had riots over Chapman, to go and do it again.

    hi Batman
I agree somewhat but believe he did it for immediate concerns-to throw police off and blame jews--But perhaps more specifically to blame jews at that time, based on the fact that he had been spotted by several jews the night of the double event.

These were jews who he thought correctly would be providing police with his description. What better way to get back and throw police off than to incriminate the very men who would be very shortly giving the police descriptions of himself.

perhaps he even thought by doing so, he might prohibit them from coming forward proactively, intimidating them to not want to get involved, since suspicion was and would be increased by implicating them by the GSG.

And perhaps this is exactly what happened, since Scwartz and lawende did not come forward, and only told police what they saw that night when the police FOUND them.

I think its worth speculating that JtR targeted not just prostitutes of the 'unfortunate' type, but ones he also believed where servicing Jews regularly near known Jewish places of gathering. Not as a punishment for a Jew breaking some religious laws but because the gentile prostitute had 'contaminated' themselves by going with a Jew and therefore spreading some sort of Jewish diseased mixture with gentiles who where also serviced. That would be in sync with the type of anti-Semitic clues left by the killer.

I have doubts that for the time and place that there wasn't a partial religious reason for these murders as supernatural beliefs where aplenty, even among gentiles. Some form of religious delusion may have played a role and certainly people still believed in things like 'Blood Libel'.

I'm not sure what is happening in this thread. Most of the major suspects are non-Jewish. It is difficult to imagine anyone WASPier than J. Montague Druitt. Police opinion at the time did not unanimously suspect a Jew. Kosminsky as a prime suspect in the public eye is a relatively recent phenomenon.

Beg to differ, but MJD comes from Macnaghten who includes Kos in hs list of "more likely thans"

There are two ways to be fooled, one is to believe what isn't true, the other is to refuse to believe that which is true.

Your are right about this. Obviously the investigators at the time didn't ever limit suspects to Jews except possibly some did for a few weeks after Hutchinson's Jew suspect. Whitechapel in general still had the leather apron in mind, so JtR was somewhat successful on that front. In fact Warren goes well out of his way to say socialists / jews didn't do it.

However in 20th and 21st century the Jewish suspect hypothesis has shot upwards. So its that Im looking at.
