  • Tumblety's Address

An earlier post gave Tumblety's address as Cavendish Square. In 1888, was that a post location? If so, was it near any readily recognizable structures or landmarks? Thanks.

We don't know where Tumblety lived in London in 1888, in fact that's been debated somewhat over the years. However Tumblety lived at 58 Margaret Street, Cavendish Square in the Spring of 1875.

    Wolf.

      Hi Barrister,

Per Joe Chetcuti, in Tim Riordan's book it was written: "(Tumblety) took a room in a lodging house run by Mrs. Annie Higgins at 58 Margaret Street, close to Regent Street and a few blocks south of Portland Place, where the Langham (Hotel) was located."

On page 133 of Tim's book, you'll find this: "(Tumblety) published a long letter describing the sights of (London) which bears the heading of Langham Hotel, August 23, 1869. As he frequently did, Tumblety chose the most prestigious location to rent a room."

So Cavendish Square was in a very good area.

      Sincerely,

      Mike

There were two other London addresses Tumblety lived at in the mid-1870s:

5 Glasshouse St, Regent str. W (Near Piccadilly Circus), he then moved back to 58 Margaret Street a few months later, lastly, he moved to 12 Devereux Court, Strand, London.

        It certainly shows a pattern.

        Sincerely,

        Mike
