  • Eddowes shawl in Birkenhead

Forgive my ignorance but can anyone tell me, or direct me to a thread Ive obviously missed, about this shawl supposedly from Eddowes?
I was aware a victorian shawl existed ?owned by Andy and Sue Parlour.
I saw a recent documentary on Deeming, and the shawl was produced because they were apparently testing for his DNA on the stains.
The documentary featured the present 'owner' who stores it at a top secret location in Birkenhead of all places, just round the corner from me.
Was just wondering what was its history.
    Many thanks
    Pete

    Hi Pete,

I have no knowledge of this personally, but seem to recall there being some doubt over the provenance of what is claimed to be the Eddowes shawl. As is the way with these things, though, I can't find the relevant thread! I believe it (the shawl) features in later editions of the A - Z if that helps.

    Regards, Bridewell.
I won't always agree but I'll try not to be disagreeable.

      Hi Warspite

I have no knowledge of the alleged shawl being at Birkenhead. However, in any case, the description of the shawl doesn't correspond to the description of the clothing worn by Catherine Eddowes, so it seems unlikely to have been hers. The shawl was offered at auction recently. The owner was a descendant of Police Sergeant Amos Simpson. Forensic testing for a TV documentary failed to link it to Eddowes. For more on Amos Simpson, see the dissertation here on Casebook, "Shrouded in Mystery: Stephen White, Amos Simpson and 'Catharine Eddowes' Shawl'" by Andrew L. Morrison.
