  • L63? Constable on duty?

Tucked away at the foot of the very well known artist's impression of the man allegedly seen by Hutchinson on the cover of the IPN of 24 November, is a drawing of a police officer with what appears to be his collar number - L63.
A quote is appended: "I was on duty all night and never heard a sound." All the drawings in this section of the cover relate to the Kelly murder so the logical assumption is that this does as well. I have read both articles in the body of the IPN for that issue and can find no mention that would explain this.

I know that the area itself would have come under, I think, H Division. But at this stage in the murders officers were being drafted in from outside the area.

    Im posting the image below:
    1) Does anyone know what area was covered by L division?
    2) Does anyone know more of this statement by Constable L63?
    Any help most gratefully received
    Chris

It's a shame Bernard Brown doesn't post here. Perhaps Monty and Rob might have a clue who this man was or if he was an artist's creation.

    Yours truly,

            Hi Chris,

Im article writing at the moment so just did the briefests of checks on PC L63.

The only reference I can come up with to an L63 is PC Henry Morton of Lambeth Div.

The problem we have was this was in reference to a case heard in 1853, many years prior to 1888. Therefore its most probably not your man. However, if that drawing is a true representation then it could be the same guy.

Will continue to work on it though.

L63 was most likely called in as beat cover in my opinion.

                Hello you all!

                Well, a simple deduction;

He was passing or had already passed The Miller's Court 13 before the cry "Murder! Oh Murder!"

                All the best

                  Chris,

Just occurred to me. PCs were pensioned off after 25 years service, meaning if Morton joined in 53 he would have retured 78, ten years prior to the IPN report....

                  .....bugger.
