  • Inspector Thomas Roots

    Birtley near Gateshead was the scene of a murder that at the time was thought to be the work of the Whitechapel murder.
    So convinced were the authorities that Dr Phillips and Inspector Roots were sent to investigate.
    Roots is described as being a part of the Criminal Investigations Department.
    Here, are the newspaper reports from several Hull Newspapers covering the Gateshead Tragedy.
