  • Mitre Square to Goulston Street; Minimum and Maximum Distances.

Jack started out from Mitre Square at about 1:45 AM. At 2:55 PM the apron piece was found in Goulston Street. The variables include:

    1. Jack's average speed (running or walking) could have been anywhere from 2 miles per hour to 12 miles per hour. (quick Google research about average walking and running speeds -- may be challenged)

    2. When the apron was actually dropped. Taking into account the possibility that Long and Halse didn't see it at 2:20, the range is anywhere from 1:55 (10 minutes) to 2:55 (70 minutes).

Taking account of these variables I have created an excel spreadsheet designed to show just how much ground he could have covered. If Jack was ambling along at 2 mph he wouldn't even have made it to Goulston Street in 10 minutes. If he was tearing along at 12 miles per hour and the Apron wasn't dropped till just before 2:55 AM he could have run all over Whitechapel and covered 13.41666 miles. The spreadsheet covers all the in betweens.

Given more time I would like to take a map of Whitechapel and figure out radii starting from Mitre Square and following all possible streets to see how far he could have gotten under varying scenarios. One would have to allow for doubling back as well.

    Hi Diana,

Monty Python's "Ministry of Silly Walks" took care of this years ago.

    Regards,
