  • Charity Auction: Rare Ripper Book #1

(Stephen or Ally: This can be moved to a more appropriate spot as you see fit.)

Charity Auction to Benefit the Childhood Leukemia Foundation

Simon Wood generously donated items to the 2008 Jack the Ripper Conference with the intention of raising money for a charitable organization. We have all agreed that the Childhood Leukemia Foundation, of which Jeremy Beadle was a longtime supporter, would be a most worthy recipient, and we have decided to donate the money raised in his memory.

We sold the less expensive items outright at the conference, but would like to allow everyone the chance to bid on the most rare (and most generous) item in order to make the largest possible donation.

    Up for auction:

Camille Wolf's Who Was Jack the Ripper?

    Grey House Books, 1995.
Limited to only 100 copies, of which this is #81.

Signed on title page by the book's producer, Loretta Lay, and compiler Camille Wolff.

The book also includes the signatures of 50 more Ripperologists, reading like a who's who of Ripperology. A few signatures are on labels.

The full list of signatories (aside from Wolff and Lay) is as follows:

    Jeremy Beadle
    Andy Aliffe
    David Anderson
    Roger Barber

We have taken early bids at the conference, with the highest bidder being Joanna Hannigan at $225. We will consider this to be the starting bid.

Please post bids on this thread in at least dollar increments.

We will consider the auction completed when it has been a minimum of one week (October 23rd), and when the auction has gone 24 hours without a bid, at which point the winner will be the highest bidder.

As this is a charity auction, the bidder will pay shipping costs (type of shipping chosen by the winner, plus insurance as the winner chooses).

Let me know if you have any questions.

    Have at it!

Please see our other auction thread for another exciting item.

Someone asked about payment options on another thread.

We can accept credit card payments through PayPal, US checks or money orders, and also UK checks.

If you need to pay with a UK check, we'll make special arrangements as to how and whom to pay. The charity itself is in the UK, so we can work something out.

Also, if anyone wants for any reason to remain anonymous, feel free to pm me a bid.

Tomorrow the auction reaches its minimum length, which means it closes if there are no further bids. As stated in the first post, the auction will stay open if there are final bids, until it goes 24 hours without a new bid.

And here's a reason to bid even higher:

A.P. Wolf has generously agreed to add a signature to the book, which means it will be considerably more of a rarity.

We're hammering out the details now.

            Thanks, A.P.

The bids are supposed to go up, but nice try.

No worries, there is only one volume out there with my signature, and that's the one I gave to Natalie for her splendid paintings.
I don't mind signing books many years after publication, but I abhor the habit at publication.
                  It's a private thing.

                      Hey Scott,

                      You're a really cheap date.

We're trying to do something worthwhile for the Children with Leukemia charity.

If you've got nothing worthwhile to contribute, then just butt out!

                      Regards,

                      Simon

Damn. I was beginning to think that this was like the credit card commercial currently running on North American television where the lowest bid wins and I was going to bid a quarter. Instead, I'll bid $375.00
